Company News >> Samsung and Stanford University collaborate to manufacture OLED displays

According to a report from Reuters, Samsung Display has recently obtained an export license, and the category that has obtained the license this time is the shipment of its OLED screens.

This news actually conveys several messages: First, Samsung is accelerating its OLED R&D; second, it is speeding up the supply of products downstream. In fact, we are more concerned about the technological innovation behind Samsung OLED.

For a long time, Samsung has established industry entry barriers through technological innovation in many technologies, which is also the basis for Samsung's profitability. Mastering industry standards and the right to speak means the right to speak in the industry.

In the OLED field, Samsung is not alone. It is reported that Samsung and Stanford University have collaborated to manufacture OLED displays with a resolution of up to 10,000 pixels per inch (PPI). This study shows that this may lead to the development of virtual reality and augmented reality technology, because high pixel density can generate more realistic images. This result can be achieved by extending the existing ultra-thin solar panel electrode design. Compared with recent developments, the pixel density of smartphone displays is much smaller-displays with the highest pixel density are usually around 400ppi to 500ppi.

Displays with high pixel density will be able to provide realistic details. According to the research of Samsung and Stanford University, in addition to high pixel density, the new OLED display will be brighter and higher in color accuracy than the existing OLED display. It will also be easier and more cost-effective to produce.

Given that most VR devices have the effect of shielding the screen-the thin lines separating the pixels become visible, this development may be beneficial to devices such as virtual reality headsets.

The key innovation behind the new OLED is a reflective metal base layer with nano-scale ripples, called an optical metasurface. The study explained that metasurfaces can manipulate the reflective properties of light and allow different colors to resonate in pixels.

Research by Samsung and Stanford University aims to provide alternatives to the two types of OLED displays currently on the market. According to research, the first one is called red-green-blue OLED, which has individual sub-pixels and contains only one color emitter. These can only be produced in small batches and used in smartphones. At the same time, white OLED displays are used by large equipment such as televisions.

Researchers successfully produced miniature proof-of-concept pixels in laboratory tests. Compared with color-filtered white OLEDs, the study found that these pixels have higher color purity, and compared with how much energy is used, the luminous efficiency is increased twice, which helps to measure the brightness of the screen. This also allows an ultra-high pixel density of 10,000ppi.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED or organic LED), also known as organic electroluminescence (organic EL) diode, is a type of light-emitting diode (LED) in which the light-emitting electroluminescence layer is a thin film of organic compounds, which responds Current. The organic layer is located between the two electrodes. Generally, at least one of these electrodes is transparent. OLED is used to create digital displays in TV screens, computer monitors, portable systems (such as smartphones, handheld game consoles, and PDAs).
