A few days ago, LG Chief Executive Officer Kwon Bong-seok announced that it will launch rolling/retractable mobile phones in 2021, intending to become the world's first mobile phone manufacturer to launch this type of OLED screen.

 

According to reports, LG has already started producing prototypes at its Pingze factory. Most commercial products undergo three to four trial productions, and each trial production can produce about one to two thousand products. However, according to reports, the supplier of the scrollable panel of this LG retractable screen phone is not LG Display, but BOE.

 

BOE demonstrated its first curled OLED prototype in 2019. Of course, LG Display is already producing curled OLED TV panels, but the technology used by the two companies is not the same technology.

 

British research company IHS Markit said that the OLED market is beginning to emerge and will grow rapidly, but unit shipments will remain slow in the foreseeable future. IHS predicts that shipments of scrollable OLED displays will reach 100,000 in 2022 and will increase to 1.3 million by 2026. By 2026, scrollable OLEDs will remain a niche market, and the market share of scrollable OLEDs among all flexible OLEDs will reach 0.2%. The foldable OLED will be a larger market-by 2025, shipments will reach 71.3 million.
