According to the Nikkei Asia Review, LG Display (LGD) plans to increase its OLED TV panel production capacity to 10 million in 2021, six times the 1.7 million in 2017. LGD's goal next year is to produce about 2.8 million OLED TV panels. In 2020, LGD will invest US$18 billion in new OLED TV panel production capacity.
LGD is enjoying the dividends from the surge in demand for OLED TVs. OLED TV sales account for about half of its high-end TVs (those that sell for more than US$2,000). In 2018, OLED's share in LGD's high-end TV panels will increase to 70%. LGD is even confident that it can sell 20 million OLED TV panels each year if it can be produced. LG apparently pledged its money to OLEDs and minimized LCD investment.
LG Display is currently providing OLED TV panels to 13 TV manufacturers, including LGD Electronics, Sony, Philips and Panasonic. Sony sold about 200,000 OLED TVs (all adopting LGD's Crystal Sound OLED technology) in 2017 and plans to sell 400,000 OLED TVs in 2018. LGD will also begin supplying Hisense Panels and hopes to become its main OLED panel customer.
